Free Chord Progression Generator

Chordoo generates chord progressions in your browser. Pick one of 18 genres, a key and major or minor, and you get a 4, 6 or 8 chord progression you can play back, tweak and export as a MIDI or WAV file. It is free and there is nothing to sign up for.

The generator does not pick random chords from the whole keyboard. Each genre has its own set of progression patterns (a ii-V-I for jazz, a minor i-VI-III-VII for hip-hop, a I-V-vi-IV for pop) and its own chord colors, so a House progression comes out with sevenths while a Rock one stays on plain triads.

How to use it

  1. Set the style. Choose a genre, a key or Random, major or minor, and how many chords you want.
  2. Generate. Press the spacebar or the refresh button. Hit play to hear it; the current chord lights up as it plays.
  3. Lock what works. Click the lock on any chord you like, then regenerate. Only the unlocked chords change.
  4. Shape the voicing. Try an inversion or an open voicing so the chords move smoothly from one to the next.
  5. Export. Download MIDI to drop onto any synth in your DAW, or WAV if you want a ready-made audio loop. Save it to your library or copy a share link.

Frequently asked questions

How do I generate a chord progression?

Choose a genre, a key (or leave it on Random) and major or minor. Chordoo builds a progression from patterns used in that genre. Press the spacebar or the refresh button for a new one, and lock any chord you want to keep before you regenerate.

How do I get the chords into FL Studio, Ableton or Logic Pro?

Click the MIDI export button. The file downloads straight away and you can drag it onto any instrument track. FL Studio, Ableton Live, Logic Pro, Cubase, Studio One, Reaper, Bitwig and GarageBand all read it. If you just want audio, use WAV export instead.

Is the chord progression generator free?

Yes. There is no paid plan, no account and no export limit. Progressions you save are stored in your own browser.

Which genres and keys are supported?

18 genres: Pop, EDM, House, Deep House, Progressive House, Disco, Hip-Hop/Rap, R&B/Soul, Jazz, K-Pop, Afrobeats, Latin, Rock, Country, Indie Pop, Classical, Drum and Bass and Hardstyle. Every genre works in all 12 keys, major or minor, with 4, 6 or 8 chords.

Which genre should I pick for lo-fi or trap?

There is no separate lo-fi preset. Jazz or R&B/Soul gives you the seventh and ninth chords lo-fi relies on. For trap and drill, pick Hip-Hop/Rap in a minor key and keep the progression to four chords.

Can I change the voicing or inversion?

Yes. The voicing panel lets you switch between root position and first or second inversion, choose closed or open voicings and move the octave. The MIDI and WAV exports follow those settings.

Can I share a progression with someone?

Use the share button to copy a link. Anyone who opens it gets the same chords, key and genre loaded in the generator, ready to play or export.
